Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition Since 1954
Cokel Welding Shop has been a cornerstone of the Carthage, Illinois community for over 70 years. Founded in 1954 by Lawrence Cokel, the shop began as a small welding operation built on hard work, skill, and a dedication to serving the needs of local farmers and businesses.
In 1968, Lawrence’s son Richard (Rick) Cokel joined the shop part-time at the age of 14 while attending high school. After graduating in 1972, Rick transitioned into a full-time role, carrying on the family legacy and growing his expertise in fabrication and welding. His hands-on experience and deep understanding of the trade helped the shop thrive.
By 1994, Lawrence and Rick officially became business partners, working side-by-side to serve the region with high-quality welding services. Their partnership lasted for over two decades and helped expand the shop’s capabilities and reputation for dependable, custom solutions.
In 2020, after decades of dedicated service, Lawrence retired. His portion of the business was purchased by Scott Cheney, who had already spent 10 years working at the shop and learning the craft. With Scott stepping into the ownership role, Cokel Welding Shop continues to honor its strong foundation while investing in modern equipment, techniques, and expanded services to better serve farms and businesses across the region.
In April 2025, Rick Cokel officially retired, closing a remarkable chapter of over 50 years of hands-on work and leadership in the shop. His legacy remains deeply woven into the company’s values and reputation, and the next generation continues to build on the standards he helped shape.
From one generation to the next, the mission has remained the same: deliver reliable, high-quality welding and fabrication with integrity, precision, and pride.
